Report and photos by Paul Buckley
Finally a perfect spring day on a Sunday and that weather lured a lot of riders to Southwick's Moto-X 338, a total of 477 entries made it another big NESC day.
The rain during the week was also just about the perfect amount keeping the dust down and helping the track to hold together although by the end of the day it was rough and whooped out.
Ralph and Diane at MX338 rounded up some sponsors for this race, Sunoco Race Fuels, Rockstar Energy drink and the Hampton Inn South Enfield all contributed prizes that were passed out to some lucky racers.
Shaun Galasso's been tearing it up in the novice class these days and this Sunday he added a couple more trophies to his collection with a win in the 200+ Novice class and a 3rd in the Open. Shaun had some great races with Jack Courtney who was second in both 200+ motos and not very far behind Shaun
Bryan Shaffer came over to Southwick from Red Hook, New York to score double moto wins in the 125 Novice class. Nice to see 36 bikes on the gate in that class, makes for a good race and there's no need to run qualifiers so nobody goes home. |
 |
Connor Sheridan on his Manchester Honda, #455 above, rode well on Sunday breaking into the 2:01 lap times on his way to winning the Open B class and taking second in the 125 Amateurs. |
 |
Ryan Dowd, on the #16 Husqvarna 250F from Chaplin Kawasaki has been the top dog in the 125 Amateur class when he and his dad, John show up and at Southwick it was no different. Ryan won both motos and posted a lap time that was only .026 of a second slower than his dad's time in the 200+ Pro/Expert moto, like the old saying says, apples don't fall far from the trees. |
 |
He might still be a youth rider but New Jersey's Luke Renzland has some serious speed. He and his brother Kody come up to New England every once in a while looking for some fast competition and with 29 Pro/Expert riders on the gate (many who have held 2 digit National numbers) they found some. Luke led every lap of both 200+ motos despite some pressure from the guy who turned the fastest lap at last year's Southwick National, Mike Sottile.
Sottile did end up second overall, third went to championship points leader, Josh Clark.
Fifth place went to New England legend, John Dowd who broke out his custom built Kenny G KX250 2-stroke to battle on against the kids and their 450s.

15 girls were on hand at Southwick, Ryann Stacy was on hand to get some seat time before the Loretta Lynn qualifier, she lead every lap of the first moto but a first lap crash in the 2nd had her playing catch up while Kate Crowley had clear sailing out front. Stacy came from 11th to 3rd with a last lap pass on Jenn Mead.
Felicia Stewart #24 above, put in some solid rides at Southwick and currently holds down second in the championship. |
 |
Scotty Byron came out on top of the 85B class which had results shuffled around more than an old deck of cards in Vegas. Byron went 1-2 for the overall, Kyle Murdoch scored 2-3 for second and Zack Johnson went DNF-1 for third.

 |
Even the 85 Novice kids look like factory riders these day and Jake Poirier #111 is a fine example, he's leading the spring championship and had a couple consistent rides at Southwick to score second overall. |
 |
Mark Norklun, from Goffstown, New Hampshire, has been hitting just about all the NESC races this spring. At Southwick he scored his fourth overall win in the 40C class. Nice going Mark. |
 |
A blast from the past to finish off this report, #55 is Ted D'Onofrio a fast NESC expert back in the 80's back doing a few races in the 40+A class. |
